Talespinner Controls Guide

Steam and Switch inputs for card combat, charm decisions, map travel, and menus—plus rebinding notes.

Controls

Talespinner is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder from Flash Cat Games and Kwalee, released 6 August 2026 on Steam and Nintendo Switch. Runs live or die on small input mistakes—mis-targeted cards, accidental end turn, or choosing fight when you meant charm. This guide documents default PC and Switch controls and how they map to the loop explained in How to Play. Scenario choice (Scenarios Overview) does not change bindings; only your habits do.

Rebind when the defaults hurt your wrists or mis-fire on Steam Deck. Always test new bindings on a plains combat node from Biomes and Map before a boss attempt covered in How to Beat Bosses.

Core combat loop inputs

Combat shares one vocabulary across platforms:

  1. Select a card from your hand.
  2. Choose targets when the card requires yokai or self targeting.
  3. Confirm play or cancel back to hand.
  4. End turn when you are done spending energy.
  5. Open intent inspect on enemies to read next actions.

On PC, mouse-driven play is standard: click cards, click targets, click end turn. Keyboard shortcuts accelerate expert play—see the PC table below. On Switch, face buttons and shoulders map the same steps without a cursor.

Charm and fight branches use the same confirm/cancel pattern. Read Charm vs Fight Yokai for decision timing; controls only execute the choice you already made.

Steam allows full rebinding in the Talespinner options menu under Controls. Practical rebinding tips:

  • Put end turn on a key far from card hotkeys to prevent mis-clicks.
  • Avoid stacking confirm and cancel on adjacent keys unless you use a hitbox keyboard.
  • Keep inspect intent on a hold-friendly key; Hanzo routes punish unread intents (Hattori Route).

Controller support on PC treats the layout like Switch face buttons; Xbox and PlayStation glyphs swap cosmetically but roles match.

Nintendo Switch controls (handheld and docked)

ActionDefault input
Navigate hand / UILeft stick + D-pad where menus allow
Select / confirm card playA button
Cancel / backB button
End turnY button (confirm on-screen if prompted)
Inspect intent / detailsX button or hold on focused enemy
Map travelMove cursor with stick; confirm node with A
Charm vs fightHighlight option; confirm with A
Pause+ button

Handheld players: tilt comfort matters on long Yuki charm routes (Yuki Onna Route). Docked players: pro controller recommended for precise end-turn timing during multi-target turns.

Switch does not expose deep remapping outside system-level button swap; learn defaults before hardcore streaks.

Map, shop, and rest screens

Map: move selection across nodes, confirm entry, read tooltips with inspect where available. Mis-entries into cave chains are control errors—slow down on act two (Biomes and Map).

Shop: buy cards, remove cards, leave shop. Confirm purchases individually; mis-buys waste gold that Builds guides assume you spend optimally.

Rest: heal or remove—cursor confirms choice. Do not double-confirm into heal when you needed removal.

Storybook events: dialogue choices use the same confirm/cancel mapping; outcomes tie to Storybook Encounters and may affect Story Points planning.

Gyokushin-specific UI notes

Gyokushin uses Jade, Fury, and Dragon Card meters visible near the combat UI. Targeting Dragon Cards follows normal confirm rules; Fury spend may require an extra confirm step when lethal is possible. Hero details: Gyokushin. Scenario still dictates bosses; controls do not change per hero.

Steam Deck and handheld PC

Steam Deck maps Steam Input to the PC layout. Recommended profile:

  • Left trackpad as mouse for card play if you dislike stick cursor.
  • L1/R1 for cycle targets when supported.
  • Rear grip for end turn only after testing accidental presses.

Battery runs favor shorter sessions; control accuracy drops when tired—relevant for attrition bosses in How to Beat Bosses.

Accessibility considerations

If hold-to-inspect strains hands, rebind inspect to toggle on PC. Switch players can enable system zoom OS-wide; in-game text size follows platform settings where supported.

Color-only intent cues should be paired with icon shapes—deckbuilder standard—so verify icons at rest nodes before elite fights.

Practice drill (five minutes)

  1. Start any scenario from Scenarios Overview.
  2. On first combat, play cards using only keyboard or only controller—no mouse if training controller.
  3. Open draw and discard piles once each.
  4. Charm one yokai if offered; fight the next to compare confirm paths.
  5. Open map, select adjacent node, cancel back, then commit.

Repeat until end turn never misfires. Then proceed to scenario routes.

When controls are not the problem

If inputs are correct but you still lose, pivot to deck and pathing—not sensitivity. Cross-read Hattori Route or Yuki Onna Route and the Talespinner review for difficulty context versus other deckbuilders.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Talespinner questions.

Can I play Talespinner fully with a controller on PC?

Yes. PC builds support controllers with a Switch-like face-button layout for combat, map travel, and menus. Rebinding is still handled in the PC options menu.

Which Switch button ends the turn by default?

Y is the default end-turn button, but always confirm the on-screen prompt during tutorials or controller changes.

Does Steam Deck use the same bindings as desktop Steam?

It uses the PC control layer through Steam Input. You may map trackpads and grips; test end turn on a safe fight before bosses.

Are charm and fight on separate buttons?

They appear as separate UI choices you confirm with the same primary confirm input. There is no single global charm hotkey by default on Switch.

Do controls differ between Hanzo and Yuki Onna scenarios?

No. Scenarios change content, not bindings. Only menus and tutorials may reorder prompts on first launch.
